Prosperity, Wisdom and Food: Diwali

Diwali celebrations

A five-day festival of light celebrated by over a billion people across India, Nepal and beyond, Diwali is one of the world’s major events. Taking place in the Hindu month of Kartika (mid-October to November), the festival celebrates the triumph of good over evil and light over darkness with parties, gifts and, perhaps most importantly, food.

Diwali is celebrated by Hindus, Buddhists, Jains and Sikhs, so there is a huge variety in how people will honour the festival. Generally, each of the five days is dedicated to a specific ritual. Day one, for example, involves cleaning and preparing your home for the festival, while day two is all about the food: buying and cooking your festive mithai, or sweets.

The entire festival hits a high note on the third day, Lakshmi Puja. On this day, devotees will dress in their finest clothes and hold puja ceremonies in honour of the goddess of wealth, Lakshmi, so that she might bring prosperity to their families in the coming year. Prayers are also dedicated to Ganesh, who brings wisdom and good luck.

While Diwali is a major Hindu festival, everyone is invited to celebrate. And what better way than to sit down with your family and feast on some of these delicious and nutritious Indian recipe ideas!
